The largest state fair in the United States occurs in Texas each year starting on the last Friday of September. The fair dates back to October 26, 1886, but it always offers something new to visitors each year.
It is the only state fair to offer visitors a complete auto show, a tradition that dates back to 1904. Several automobiles have made their debut at the fair, including the 1988 Chevrolet Blazer, the 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe and the 2008 Ford Sporttrac.
Visitors are welcomed by Big Tex each year.Confused? Here ‘s a little help . Big Tex is a 52 foot tall cowboy and a fair icon, since he made his first appearance in 1952. His enormous voice can be heard all over the fairgrounds.
Last year, an 8,000 foot greenhouse was constructed near the midway. The greenhouse holds 1,000 hanging baskets and several beehives. The greenhouse is also home to Farmer Mike, who carves pumpkins weighing up to a half ton.
The fair also serves as home to several football games. Traditionally, the Red River shootout between Texas and Oklahoma occurs during the fair. This game draws thousands of fans from Oklahoma and Texas.
The fair is also a great place to eat some very unusual food. Some traditional favorites include cotton candy, hot dogs, and hamburgers. Fairgoers can also indulge in deep-fried Oreo cookies, deep-fried Twinkies, deep-fried peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and deep-fried beer. Each year the fair offers two food awards to vendors. One award is given for the most creative food, while another one is given for the best tasting food.

Whether you are coming for or short visit or planning an extended stay, Texas offers something for everyone as far as the eye can see. The state of Texas is full of many wonders that should not be missed by any. From historical sites to outdoor adventure to a leisurely cruise down the Colorado River there is fun and adventure awaiting all.

One of the first must visit places in this magnificent state is the Alamo, famed for it’s battle and stand against General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. A small party of Texan’s held off the General and his invading army. Visitors can relive the moments and learn about this great time in history.

Another must see in the great state of Texas is the State Aquarium. Here over 3000 living things in the Gulf of Texas make a home and are observable by all those curious minds. There is definately much to see and learn at this site, and it is an affordable venture.

If you are looking for something to get away from the big cities, why not take a cruise down the Colorado River and view eagles as they fly high overhead, or perhaps take in some fishing for a day. Texas offers something for young and old alike, and you will not likely here the resounding “I’m bored” that is spoken on many trips. The great state of Texas is anything but boring!

There are plenty of fun and interesting places to explore when you visit Texas. If you are only visiting you won’t be able to see everything, but if you are planning on moving to Texas you’ll have plenty of sites to see. Whatever your plans are, visiting or a relocation, Texas has it all.
The best Texas cities for your family’s enjoyment are either the bigger cities or coastal towns. Places like Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, and Fort Worth will fill your appetite for the big city atmosphere while other towns such as Galveston, Corpus Christi, Port Aransas, and the South Padre Island will give you a smaller town feel with a beach front view.
If you’re from Texas, you can saving money and invest more in your travels by signing up with an energy provider like just energy. Then you can visit the splendid Riverwalk in San Antonio before heading to the Alamo to get you history fix. After a restful evening drive over to Port Aransas and jump on one of their dolphin cruises for a fun time. Once done visit Port Aransas’ annual sand castle building competition and show off your sculpting skills.
These are only a few ideas for everything you can do in Texas.

We’re fortunate in Texas that we don’t really have a lot of bitter cold days (well maybe in the Panhandle), so we can enjoy some awesome autumn gardening. Make sure you plan early to get your fall vegetable garden planted, and also take full advantage of the huge display of color offered by mums, dusty miller and moss roses. A key to a stunning garden is to not overdo the color, though; so be careful and mindful where you put in your seasonal displays. And don’t forget that pumpkins in a variety of colors and sizes look absolutely fabulous scattered throughout beds not only do they add color, texture and volume to any garden, but they add hominess as well. Enjoy the changing temperatures and get outside to put your personal stamp on your landscape.

Blisteringly hot summer days in the Lonestar state will exhaust even the best of us. If you’re looking for a little reprieve, head down to one of this state’s many beaches that stretch over 600 miles of coastline along the Gulf of Mexico. Though you aren’t guaranteed to completely evade this problem, Texas beaches have fared much better than surrounding states in the recent BP oil spill.Galveston Island is one of the most popular beach vacation destinations in Texas, dotted with resorts cottages and luxury hotels. There are even cruises that set sail from this island. But if you just want a relaxing day trip, there are plenty of opportunities as well. East Beach is one of the most visited beaches in Texas just a short drive from Houston. Lively crowds are guaranteed entertainment and even drinking is legal on this party beach. However, if you’re planning an afternoon with the kids, try a more family-friendly spot such as Stewart Beach. If your idea of a perfect day at the beach consists of a picnic, kayaking or fishing, Corpus Christi is the place to go. Most of the beaches in this area are much more centered around enjoying nature, and offer plenty of opportunities to participate in outdoor activities. Mustang Island State Park has an extensive system of water trails for kayaking or canoeing. To avoid crowds and enjoy an afternoon of solitude, Whitecap Beach is a quiet, natural beach that doesn’t see crowds. Some will argue that the best beaches in Texas are located on South Padre Island. One of the most attractive aspects of this vacation spot is its diversity of activities. Young singles looking for a high-energy weekend will enjoy the vibrant nightlife at area bars and clubs such as Chaos or Tequila Sunset. But, it’s not just a party beach. There’s plenty to entertain the little ones as well, with dolphin tours, horseback riding on the beach and the Gravity Adventure Park.

Most people probably associate bluegrass and folk music with the state of Texas. While there is a strong presence of these musical genres in the area, Texas has a very impressive and diverse music scene. Austin seems to bring in the largest and best-known music throughout the year, but there is an abundance of festivals, concerts and entertainment all over the state. The Austin City Limits festival held every fall hosts over 100 artists and bands and is attended by thousands from around the nation and around the world. This year the festival will take place October 8-10 in Zilker Park. Some of this year’s headliners included The Eagles, Phish, M.I.A. and the Flaming Lips. A wide range of artists representing many different genres and generations make this festival great for all music lovers.
<p style"text-align: left">The Kerrville Folk Festival has been running for nearly 40 years, since its start in 1972. This 18-day festival that takes place every May and June showcases many new and aspiring artists. A few well-known artists who once played on this stage include Lyle Lovett, Willie Nelson and Mary Chapin Carpenter. The smaller, weekend long, Kerrville Wine and Music Festival is held every year over Labor Day. With a similar concept and style of music, this fall festival adds a focus on great wine and winemakers from around Texas.

Another legendary festival held in Austin is South by Southwest (SXSW). This week and a half long event is broken down into music, film, and interactive segments. This festival not only provides non-stop entertainment, but is also a great place to help new artists get started and learn tips of how to succeed in the industry. SXSW 2011 will take place March 11-20.
